Minnesota Vikings Museum: Honoring the players, and the fans

Creative Brief

Role: Senior Experience Designer

Audience: We were challenged with appealing to a broad audience — we wanted to make sure a fresh 10-year-old fan had just as much fun as a 70-year-old reliving their own Vikings’ memories.

Needs: The Minnesota Vikings have a rich and storied history going back to their first season in 1961. After accumulating a vast collection of historical memorabilia, the Vikings’ leadership needed a space to showcase these commemorative displays and capture the incredible moments in Vikings’ history to share with new generations of fans.

From the Vikings: Fans are the lifeblood of the Vikings’ community and spirit. This space should honor them too, not just the team and players.

Spatial Design

We were tasked with filling a 14,000 square-foot space at the Minesotta Vikings’ new training camp facility. For the museum experience we designed 18 distinct activations in themed zones to provide a diverse, story-focused experience for all fans.

Each zone combines physical artifacts and displays with moments of interactive technology that bring the stories to life in an engaging manner through audio and video that are responsive to touch.

The visually stunning areas, such as the “Frozen in Time” exhibit, which holds the jerseys and trophies from the players with retired numbers within ice carved columns, will continue to draw not only fans, but those curious to learn more.

After the spatial design and concept phase were complete, I focused my efforts on developing the technology activations in the museum, primarily focusing on the following interactive experiences.

Hall of Fame Kiosk

A feature wall of monitors and interactive football sculptures highlights a set of Vikings Hall of Famers. Each football has the corresponding Legend’s hand print molded into it. Fans place their hand in the print to activate a video showing the Legend’s career highlights.

Gesture Activated Book

An oversized book sculpture with interactive projection mapping features a variety of content including stats on the 50 Greatest Vikings, coaches recruiting journals and more. Fans use gesture technology to navigate throught the book, and flip pages.

Game Ball Display & KIosk

A large display wall of game balls has interactive lighting with a coresponding kisok for vistors to explore all the details. Visitors can read the stories about individual balls, or see the connections between balls when sorting them by year, opponent, player, ect.

Interactive Theater

At the center of the museum, is a space dedicated for the fans to listen, learn & share their own Vikings’ lore. Inspired by the experience of sitting around a campfire watching the stars, and hearkening back to the days when stories of family were told around a campfire.

During story mode, as visitors wait for a video to play, fans can share favorite moments and stories of their own Vikings memories on a designated kiosk in the theater. These stories will be shared on a dynamic stary sky, just as if they are sharing around a camp fire.
